Stonington First Selectman Edward Haberek Jr, a Democrat, fought off a challenge by Republican businessman Edward O. McCabe Tuesday night to win a second two-year term in office. He will be joined on the bipartisan Board of Selectmen by his running mate, George Crouse Jr., and Glee McAnanly, McCabe's running mate.

The final tally was 3,166 votes for Haberek, 1,456 votes for McCabe, 2,771 votes for Crouse and 1,712 votes for MacAnanly. Haberek won 68 percent of the vote for first selectman.

Democrat Sandy Grimes was the top vote-getter for the Board of Finance, with 1,896, and current chairman Glenn Frishman was re-elected with 1,492. Two petitioning candidates came up short in their bids, Lynn Young (910) and Robynne Madison (184).

Board of Education chairwoman Gail Braccidiferro MacDonald earned the most votes, out of seven candidates for four spots, with 2,711. Also elected were her fellow Democrats Alisa Morrison (2,540) and Kevin Bornstein (2,294) and Republican Faith Leitner (2,431). The other candidates were Republicans Jonathan Jones (2,114), Robert Marseglia Jr. (1,938) and Michael Laskowski (1,525).

In North Stonington, longtime First Selectman Nicholas H. Mullane II held off Democratic challenger Marilyn Mackay to win another two-year term.

Mullane defeated first-time challenger Mackay, a member of the town's Economic Development Commission, by a 943 to 562 margin - 63 to 37 percent.

In other races, Republican Shawn P. Murphy (900) and Democrat Leroy "Bill" Briscoe (571) were elected as selectmen, leaving Mackay without a seat.

Mackay was returned to a two-year Economic Development Commission seat, with 735 votes, along with Gladys Chase, 841.
