EAST LYME - At the end of the game, the scoreboard showed that East Lyme beat the Stonington High football team 27-6, but the game was not that close.
The Vikings dominated the Bears physically and controlled the play from wire to wire in Friday's out of division game between ECC schools.
"I think the East Lyme kids are strong kids," Stonington coach A.J. Massengale said. "We have to work harder in the off-season getting stronger. This game and last week too, they're both good lessons on why the off-season is important."
The Bears (5-4) ran just 22 offensive plays in the game and didn't get a first down until the second half.
The Vikings (8-1), on the other hand, accumulated 293 yards on 63 rushes and moved the ball at will on the rainy, windy night.
The Bears were coming off an emotional 15-14 loss to Griswold in their previous game, but Massengale said that the letdown of that game didn't effect the Bears' performance.
"We had a good week of practice," said Massengale. "I don't think anything from that (Griswold) game seeped into this game."
East Lyme moved the ball well on its first drive but the drive stalled at the Bear's 2-yard line after a holding penalty negated a touchdown.
The Bears gave the ball back to the Vikings after its first of two consecutive three-and-outs. East Lyme got the ball back at the Stonington 43-yard line.
The Vikings methodically moved the ball down the field with heavy doses of running backs Kevin Miao and Jordan McCoy.
East Lyme quarterback Jacob Grills kept the ball on a play-action bootleg and scored the first points of the game and gave the Vikings a 6-0 lead.
East Lyme's second touchdown drive was a mirror image of the first.
Grills capped a 63-yard drive with a 2-yard run and followed it with a two-point conversion run to put East Lyme up 14-0 at the half.
Shane Balestracci's 25-yard run on the first play of the second half gave the Bears their initial first down of the game, but Stonington was forced to punt three plays later.
Grills hit Eric McGlone on a 35-yard TD pass off a flea-flicker on the ensuing Viking possession to extend the lead to 21-0.
McCoy added an 8-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to put East Lyme up 27-0.
McCoy rushed for 107 yards on 20 carries.
Miao ran for 127 yards on 24 attempts.
Stonington finally got on the scoreboard on its final drive of the game.
A 53-yard Balestracci run set the Bears up with a 1st-and-goal at the Viking 6-yard line before Zach Branesky punched it in for the game's final score.
The final drive accounted for three of Stonington's four first downs and 72 of its 109 yards of total offense.
Next up for Stonington is the Westerly Bulldogs, at home, on Thanksgiving Day at 10:30 a.m.
"We'll be all right emotionally (after two tough losses)," said Massengale. "I think the Thanksgiving Day game for both the Westerly kids and Stonington kids is a game where there's so much emotion that both teams play up.
"We've gone into that game as the underdog and our kids are always fired up for that game."
